Hungry, we stepped into the enchanting embrace of LA’s iconic “Tam O’Shanter,” the cherished culinary gem that has welcomed patrons since 1922. Nestled in the heart of the city (well, Atwater Village), this historic establishment, lovingly overseen by the Lawry family, stands as an enduring testament to tradition, familial pride, and meat – specifically beef.

We embarked on a journey through time as we entered its storied doors, greeted by the unmistakable allure of Scottish heritage woven into every corner. From the crackling warmth of rustic fireplaces to the embrace of wooden beams overhead, each element whispers tales of the Scottish Highlands and made us want to shout Alba gu bràth! It was as if we were in an early season of Outlander, perhaps dinning in Lallybroch herself! As a proud member of Clan McCubbin, with whispers of ancestral rights to Knockdolian Castle, the resonance of this Scottish ambiance was especially poignant. Here, amidst the camaraderie of fellow diners (my wife, daughter, and her boyfriend) the welcoming embrace of traditional prime-rib and Yorkshire pudding (yes, I know Yorkshire isn’t in Scotland, but that is what they have on the menu) promised this visit would become a cherished memory.

The Tam O’Shanter is renowned for hearty and traditional fare, offering a menu that includes prime rib, roast beef sandwiches, and other classic American dishes with a Scottish twist. Their Lawry’s Prime Rib, in particular, has garnered a loyal following, and the restaurant is known for its signature seasoning and meticulous preparation – also known as salt. The Tam O’Shanter’s clear dedication to quality and consistency has helped it maintain its reputation over the decades. And it didn’t disappoint!

In addition to its rich culinary offerings, the Tam O’Shanter boasts a storied history that further adds to its legend. The restaurant has been a gathering place for many notable figures over the years, including Hollywood celebrities and literary figures. Walt Disney was a frequent patron and even had a favorite table, adding a touch of historical significance to the dining experience (it was on the other side of the wall from our table!) It is said that Walt Disney based the cottage of the dwarves from Snow White on the interior of the Tam O’Shanter. His favorite table was Table 31.

Overall, the Tam O’Shanter stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of classic hospitality and excellent meat. Its combination of history, ambiance, and quality beef makes it a unique and cherished part of Los Angeles’ dining scene. If you’re seeking a memorable meal, a taste of history, or simply a cozy spot to enjoy with friends and family, the Tam O’Shanter offers a truly special experience. The outdoor dinning also looked really nice. But nothing beats their neon sign!
